007-8J Chile's Collahuasi copper workers set to strike as talks fail

Santiago, Chile (Platts)--8Jul2007
Unionized workers at the Collahuasi copper mine in northern Chile are set
to strike from early July 9 after extended talks with the company, controlled
by mining majors Anglo American and Xstrata, failed to reach a deal, a union
official told Platts Sunday.
"There were points where we just did not reach agreement," said union
president Hernan Farias while travelling to the mine for the start of the
protest.
Although the company agreed to increase its wage offer to 4%, from 3.4%
previously, other demands on production bonuses and additional shifts were
not met, he explained.
The 690-strong union voted overwhelmingly June 27 to reject the latest
deal from the management but a legal strike was delayed by a week after the
company applied for five days of mediated talks permitted under Chilean labor
law.
The mine, one of Chile's largest, produced 440,000 mt of copper in
concentrate and cathode last year.
"The strike should have a major impact on production, they'll be lucky if
they can produce at 20% of capacity," Farias noted.
"The length (of the strike) depends on the will of the company to close
the differences we have - it could last a day or several," he said.
