Especially the last sentence: "The standardization is what drove it" is important. The tendency right now is towards heterogeneous networks, that require cross-platform standardization.

To me, it looks like MSFT tries to avoid non-proprietary standards, and the reason is very understandable, I just don't believe that the world is working towards a proprietary future. They tried to avoid the internet but changed their mind. They try to avoid some internet standards with MSIE 5.5, but I don't think that strategy is a good long-term strategy.

MSFT seems more and more like a hot air balloon, but where the stock price seems to have fallen down to a reasonable level.
