Sun Microsystems has only just started delivering its UltraSparc III processor, but already the company is touting the split-personality of its upcoming UltraSparc V chip.

It is not clear to me if this new design will significantly outperform other designs (like Intel's) currently under development but rather just be more efficient when processing certain types of data.

I would like to see SUNW also work on porting Solaris to Itanium as it becomes available. Sunw has a very valuable asset in Solaris and everything they can do to promote it's use will allow customers more choices based on their applications.

Solaris machines using the new Ultra V chip will have a more powerful set of extended commands even if they port the OS to Itanium. It certainly would be a challenge for SUNW to support both processors but I think it would be worth the investment.
