What is / was your objective, to just run Windows 7? I find that I don't need many Windows programs any more on my home desktop rig, especially that more is done via the web. WINE (recent version installed from repository) often does the job. For me, Wine runs the pokerstars.com client and Google Sketchup on occasion. Most other programs have a native Linux version (Google Chrome browser, Skype) or workable substitute (OpenOffice.org).
