Before the clouds rolled in Monday, the other ray of sunlight in an otherwise bleak semiconductor universe came from Credence Systems. The stock rallied early after ABN Amro said healthy sales of its automatic test equipment (ATE) should help the company beat the fourth-quarter consensus earnings estimate of 95 cents a share by a nickel or more. What's more, analyst Nikolay Tishchenko thinks healthy ATE sales should continue through the first and second quarters of next year. He's looking for 51 cents or more in upside to the fiscal 2001 consensus earnings estimate of $3.42. But Credence shares, too, ultimately gave way to the sector's bearish undertow.
