keep the nukes, but ditch the biological weapons. swear them off completely. offer instant inspections from any qualified entities anytime they want. prove beyond a doubt that we don't have them.

people will say: "what? if they have them, we need them too!" no we don't need them. making biological weapons has a few big disadvantages. first, it would be very hard to tell exactly who started a war. then there's a risk that the weapons maker could be accidentally wiped out too. i believe that if we have nukes, we can adequately defend ourselves. eventually, a long time down the road, we might be able to phase out the nukes too. conventional weapons might someday become more powerful than nukes.

if we honestly swore off biological weapons we would automatically take the high ground. if there was a release, we would not be suspected. let the others be suspected of any release if they refuse to abolish all biological weapons. if something gets loose, at least we likely wouldn't be targeted for retaliation. that of course assumes that just about everyone believes that we have really given those kinds of weapons up.

we could still be involved in medicine using viruses. just never use them as weapons.

eventually more and more countries would probably give them up just for the prestige of having done so. to a certain degree, they would be seen by the rest of the world as virtuous.

pollyannish? maybe. worth exploring, probably. but making it a reality would take more planning and effort than i have left in me. time for the next generation to step up.
