Macronix runs counter to trend, sales surge in 2001... Bucking the trend in the industry, Taiwan's Macronix International Co. Ltd. said its sales for the month of February were NT$2.459 billion ($30.5 million), a 43.3% jump over the like period a year ago.
The company's accumulated sales from January to February of 2001 were NT$4.951 billion ($151.4 million), a 44.3% increase over the like period a year ago. Hsinchu-based Macronix, Taiwan's largest supplier of flash memories, EPROMs, EEPROMs, and other devices, attributed the results to soaring demand for flash and ROM chips. -M.L.

...but Winbond stumbles like others in Taiwan Taiwan's Winbond Electronics Corp. said its sales for the month of February totaled NT$2.229 billion ($68.2 million), a decrease of 22.6% compared to NT$2.878 billion in the like period a year ago.
The accumulated revenue for January through February of 2001 totaled NT$4.663 billion ($142.6 million), a decrease of 27.4% when compared with the accumulated total revenue of NT $6.419 billion over the same period last year.
Hsinchu-based Winbond, Taiwan's third largest chip maker, blamed the problem on "continued reduction in DRAM pricing" and other factors. -M.L |
