Charles, if it is a document, it should not cause any trouble. Only an executable can. Anyone opening an executable should be VERY careful. Also, the e-mail client should warn the user and I think in this case, it does.

Of course, it would be preferable to run attached executables in a sandbox by default. However, that would mean that some of the legitimate EXEs will need too much interaction from the user to get them to run. I think that the bigger problem is not with the client but with the e-mail servers. It should be relatively straightforward for an email server admin to run a filter to delete all the virus email. Either the email servers have not been written well OR the admins were not careful enough.
