Good points. Andy Grove makes an interesting point in his "Paranoia" book. The companies who have been successful in the PC era have been those who represent the "horizontal" paradigm, e.g. dominate their submarkets like semiconductors (INTC) software (MSFT), hardware (CPQ,DELL). Those who have failed followed the old "Vertical" paradigm e.g. those who tried to make all components. These are represented by IBM and Apple.

I believe that SUNW's not following the Wintel platform will find themselves added to the list. The NC may have a role in the industry down the track, but now it is a last ditch attempt to stop the wintel platform before it invades the server turf. This reminds me of IBM's OS/2 program and may have similar results. IBM focussed on what they had to sell (a separate operating system) NOT what people wanted to buy (a backwards compatible platform that was easier to use).

McNeeley and Elison should heed Gerstner's words, "The battle of the desktop is over and we have lost. Now, let's move on."
