I have a friend who has a large number of prints of photos, some fairly old. She has multiple kids, so both preservation and being able to distribute them makes scanning attractive. We are thinking of a sheet scanner, despite the obvious attraction of flatbed for photos, just because the volume will make it a lot easier with a sheet scanner and the models we are looking at can capture writing on the back simultaneously.

The question is, what software to use for possible cleanup. This is not a person who is going to master Photoshop and she is 2000 miles away so there is a limit to the handholding. The desired functionality would be something automatic to compensate for fading (some have been on the walls for years) and age-related color shift. Dust removal sounds good. Anything like cloning and touch up is probably too advanced, i.e., this should be as close to automatic as possible and only involve a few buttons she can learn to press.

Ideas?
