It may help to understand the "appliance" status of MAC's and PC's if one looks to other products. ie, a mixer is a kitchen appliance and is mostly price driven. Kitchen-Aide probably mkes the "best" mixer and sells mainly to the professional market because that market is feature and quality driven. Other brands, Sunbeam, etc are aimed at the consumer market and that market is muuch larger, but mainly price-driven.

The question becomes (1) Is the computer market now at the "appliance" stage?, and (2) Does Apple want or need to be the high-priced Kitchen-Aide professional computer or a part of the much larger, lower priced, but more competitive mass market?

I don't know the answers; I just think putting a slightly different frame of reference on the subject might help resolve the issue, or at least lead to more questions that could.
