To fix this, I had to edit the registry. The relevant registry key is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\IrpStackSize

I had to increase the value from B (or hexadecimal 11) to F (or hexadecimal 15). After rebooting the Windows machine, I was able to connect as before.

Oddly, Microsoft claims that the default value for this parameter is F or 15. Since I had never heard of this parameter before, I don't think I was the one who changed it.

Well that's about as arcane and drastic of a solution that I can imagine. I have never edited my registry, but I guess I will have to one of these days.

However...

Doren, the reason some of us upgrade to new OS versions as soon as they come out is so that we can find all the bugs and problems, so that you may upgrade later after they've been fixed. It's all for you, Doren.

When Panther came out I thought OSX is finally ready for prime time. I had just one vexing problem. I could not send any emails over 7K. This was driving me nuts. It was a problem with both Mail.app and Entourage.

I listed the problem on various user groups, consulted my DSL provider, called Apple. No one knew anything. Finally in desperation I got through to a higher level person at my provider and in an offhand remark he said he thought he had heard that the packet size was affecting it. Instantly, I knew it was the problem. Apparently Apple had changed the default from 1492 to 1500 on Panther.

That was arcane enough for me. Took me 3 months to figure it out.
