That China is stepping into the shoes that Chavez has forcefully vacated (Nationalizing oil fields that were developed my western oil companies) should come to no one's surprise. Now with China stepping back out of an geological area that will be under heavy American influence (The Canadian oil sands) and into an area where Chavez hates American politics makes a lot of sense. So Chavez is courting a strong alternate energy partner like China who could care less about human rights violations and doesn't want to interfere with Venezuelan internal issues. They just want the oil!

The side benefit to Chavez is that he now might have a 'big brother' who can defend him should he continue mouthing off to Bush.
