I agree with Lance that MMs prefer not to hold shares. They would like to be "flat" at the end of every day (buy and sell an equal number of shares and not holding any). However, they cannot always be flat and sometimes they will hold them (or vice versa be in a short position). As a general rule, however, they would prefer to be flat. This is why some selling is not a bad thing when a stock is moving up because the MM does not have to go short.

I think right now we are seeing many MMs covering shorts at bargain prices and making a fortune. For example, they sold ABCD stock short for .50 cents and are now buying it back at .10 cents. Not a bad deal for the MM. Once they squeeze the last drop out of the turnip I think we will see BB stocks begin to rise again.
