Currently, DSP's products are really the only alternative
to Qualcomm's CDMA chipsets. With the competition's breath now much stronger on its back, Qualcomm's shares slipped a tad this morning.

I'm always amazed how every media article seems to gloss over the fact the QCOM receives royalties from all these "competitors". I zapped the following (in my best annoyed tone) to the author of the article:

"How come you don't bother to mention that DSP pays royalties to QCOM for each and every CDMA chipset produced? You make it sound like they are a true competitor. Now, Intel will be paying royalties to QCOM."

...and got the following response:

Bob,

Thanks for writing. You've touched on a good point. I must admit that I'm still getting up to speed on CDMA. But based on the speed that the sector is advancing, I have to wonder how relevant the royalty issue will be in a few years.

I think one of the subtle nuances to keep in mind here is that Intel views technology from the standpoint of creating a standard and then reaping steady returns from that standardization for years and years. My guess is that Intel sees an opening to standardize a future wireless echnology, by it 3G or otherwise. If that is indeed the plan, then Qualcomm has to be considered a competitor at this point.

Thanks again and Fool on!
Brian
