Your points regarding MSFT's adoption and application of work by others is well made in that even MSDOS was originally designed by others (then called QDOS) and purchased by Gates and Allen.
That ability to take something somebody else has developed and turn it lose in applications previously unthought of is a big reason for MSFT's success.
You use the term "Microsoft monopoly" as if there is not a difference between a "standard" and a "monopoly." Remember a co. called Apple? They were the leaders in the field before MSFT came to play. That MSDOS and Windows became the dominant PC operating system (over that of Apple and many others) and application interface, does not make them monopolists. You want to use a Mac? Go ahead. But I wouldn't recommend it if you hope to actually acquire new programs written for it. Knock yourself out.
That you say MSFT stole this or stole that almost comes across as more sour grapes directed at them, but I realize it's popular sport to target MSFT these days. It's not just you, but the fact that MSFT brought computers to the forefront as much as they have and become one of the better known names within the software industry rankles a lot of people. The popularity of the software standards the co. has established is what allows them to have input into what direction they want to go next. When you're the market leader, you can do that.
Has MSFT benefitted from Sun and Oracle's technology? Yes. Has there been benefit going the other way? One would have to say so. Are people much smarter than me saying that Sun is making a big mistake in ignoring the Wintel platform in its new products? Many.
I personally don't care what direction Oracle or Sun decide to go. I know that if industry leaders like them can find it in their hears to work w/ these little upstarts, MSFT and INTC, they just may give them the break they've been waiting for. Oh, gosh. I can just see Gates and Grove quiver that McNeely is being a jerk and won't play ball w/ them. Like they care.
The sad thing is that these co.'s could jointly do so much more if so much energy wasn't spent attacking MSFT and, to a lesser extent, INTC.
