By Chuck Moozakis, InternetWeek

To IT managers, the road to data and voice convergence is like a roller coaster: full of twists and turns and sharp curves. Cisco Systems on Monday tried to smooth out some of those bumps at NetWorld + Interop with the introduction of a platform designed to bring all voice and data components under a single architecture.

AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video, and Integrated Data) includes a mix of more than 30 existing and new software and hardware products, ranging from routers and switches to IP phones and IP PBXs, according to Marthin De Beer, director of multiservice solutions.

Specifically, Cisco took the wraps off four AVVID components: the MCS 7830 Media Convergence Server, an NT platform that directs voice, video, and data across Cisco switches and routers; Call Manager 2.4, which provides call processing across IP networks; two digital IP gateways; and two IP telephony handsets.
