Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) said its outlook for the remainder of fiscal 1997
continues to be positive, and it expects increasing demand for its products as its
customers ramp up production lines.

The company said its third-quarter results will reflect an $80 million payment from
Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS) for the previously-reported settlement of a lawsuit. As
reported, Novellus will also pay ongoing royalties subsequent to the date of the
settlement.

Applied Materials said new orders booked during the latest quarter fell to $1 billion
from $1.3 billion a year ago.

The company said reduced business volume and increased investment in 300mm
product development led to lower gross margin and net income in the latest quarter.

The company noted it is moving to extend all of its process technologies to the
coming 300mm wafer size.

Applied Materials supplies wafer fabrication systems and services to the
semiconductor industry.

It was titled, "Applied Materials $0.54 vs $1.01" FYI.
