Thomas, as a fellow San Franciscan, I think your analysis of male homosexuals, the arts and respectability is very accurate.

My own observations of this world are that homosexuals flourish in the arts in places they can be more feminine. Interior decorators and ballet dancers and ice skaters, for example, are all playing with flowing, colorful, generally-recognized-as-feminine energy. There is not much of that in commercial photography.

I have read enough articles in local newspapers, and letters to the editor, to be struck with what a closed society the gay San Francisco community can be. I have read letters from black and Latino homosexuals coming here who have experienced blatant racism. There is enormous pressure to look young and be extremely fit and very trim--a general focus on the exterior, rather than the soul, of the person. And young runaways from more conservative parts of the country can be treated very badly--used for their bodies, but not helped with adequate social programs. The Castro can be a very cruel place for male homosexuals.
