Scott; Been there , done that. I came from the harware end, and had the mits and others, even an old PDP8 that I bought for $200(about 5 tons of stuff and racks and cards, filled my garage, never had the power to run it, but I got some nice magnets, and I used the hard drive actuators to mount mirrors on(galvanometers) for laser light show fool arounds) and later scrapped for $6000 in gold and aluminum and motors(it was that or get another garage).
Never got into programming, it did not draw me. But I am constantly downloading myriads of freeware programs to do arcane things.
