It is a probably a fair touchstone. I however know a few investors who use no email or little email. I also know some companies who use little or no internet, and some others who use very little office space!

There is less and less reason to use office space and secretaries with cell phones, blackberries and the like. But usage prices need to come down. And networked employees need to learn to work these nets for maximizing biz efficiency. This is yet to come as some treat the ease of contact usage as pestiferous, rather than empowering.

The real use of a secretary office manager/IR person is to take the contact work load off executives, who should be working or in meetings... if that is an activity that need go on for much longer in its present form.

It is still hard to build and maintain a web page from mobile comms such as PDA's. I have plumped for micro micro comps that have 40gb drives and 1 gb ram that can run full OS's at 1+ ghz, but you don't see many. Blackberries won't cut it if you want to do real computing on the go, and there is still no universal edge type wireless. What you need for the truly rootless office is a hi speed wireless bonus size pda which will run anywhere on the spheroid. When these machines become capable of video net conferencing they will replace the downtown meeting and save a lot of moving about and board room herd behaviour. Face to face need only be a last resort.

Where the colonies were run from boardrooms in England most of the executives of operations in the frontier had never left the island, and their lieutenants used to communicate only once every 3 to 6 months back to the head office. This sort of round trip comm sufficed until late in the last century for many geological teams, who were basically out of touch for much of the explo season. This standard is becoming less and less acceptable.

However there still is an old guard who use little modern communications. W. O. Douglas used to get away from society to the extent that people who wanted to contact him had to leave a message in the knothole of a tree.
