There are many others that can handle this question better then i can... anyway i'll give it a shot.

>>> single modem for CAP and DMT. To your knowledge, who is developing a similar modems?

I don't know of anyone doing this today. I few weeks ago i did talk about the Central Office equipment being able to house both CAP and DMT plug-in cards to support either line-code. The only vendor that 'i believe' officially declared using both DTM and CAP is WSTL. Now for the modem that sits in the house... why would any vendor want to support both? Granted the RBOCS may want this... it seems the costs would be high.

From zdnet.com
"In theory, if you have a fast enough digital signal processor chip, you can create a card that can detect whether you have a DMT signal or a CAP signal, and adjust accordingly," said Jeff Waldhuter, executive director of research and development for Nynex"

I don't understand this completely... anyway... a key point here is "In theory". Can this happen .... i quess it can... but the DMT/CAP issue will hopefully be resolved by that time.

>>> Is it what you are referring to with Motorola's "single chip"?

No... Mot 'I believe' is taking several functions that today are located in 2 or 3 chips and creating a single chip. This 'to my best knowledge' does NOT include CAP.
