I still remember my high school Latin teacher as the best and most influential I ever had. She had grey hair in a bun and wore half-glasses and she seldom smiled. She hated silliness, but mostly she hated anyone who desecrated the English language. I was very surprised to learn that she had only a two year teaching college certificate. She went back in her fifties to get her BA (I remember thinking how admirable- to be so close to death and still learning! Eeek) I would be hard pressed to explain why I loved her so much. My brother hated her- and Latin.
I think it was her integrity. Her love of knowledge was very pure. She could read the Iliad as if she were reading the paper.

As for today's teachers, CW had a Chemistry teacher who was very difficult. She was tough and had a very strong ego. They fought all the time. He would get so mad at her, he'd be in tears. But he passed both AP Chemistry exams with 5s- the best you can get. And she has written him recommendations that probably got him into college. They both worked very hard to earn the other's respect, I believe. Just as I respected Mrs. Weaver and worked hard to make As in her class.

You don't seem to get too many of those kinds of teachers- and not every great teacher is the same for everyone. But like Alexa, I had teachers who gave me an incredible gift for life and I can't think of a more important way to leave your mark on posterity.
Although, if you are very rich and give me a million dollars, I'll promise to remember you kindly, too.
