High-torque rotation transmitted through fiber

"In Italy, a team of scientists has developed a way of sending a mechanical rotation to a rotor via a long, bendable, acoustic waveguide. The technique may give mechanical engineers the same ability that designers of optical systems have long taken for granted: the ability to generate power at one location and use it somewhere else.
Though work is still at an early stage, researchers see potential for the acoustic fibers to be used in common electromechanical microsystems (such as printers and scanners) and in medical applications."
