IEEE Recognizes New Focus Achievements in Tunable Lasers Dr. Timothy Day, Co-Founder and CTO, Given Award at LEOS 2002 in Scotland Wednesday October 16, 5:00 pm ET
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2002--New Focus, Inc. (NASDAQ:NUFO - News), a leading provider of photonics technology solutions, today announced that IEEE's Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (IEEE/LEOS) selected Dr. Timothy Day, co-founder and CTO, to receive the Engineering Achievement Award for his contributions to the development and commercialization of external cavity tunable diode lasers for telecommunications. "We are delighted that Tim has been recognized yet again for his leadership role in tunable lasers, this time by the IEEE," said Nic Pignati, president and chief executive officer of New Focus, Inc. "Together with the recent OSA recognition, these awards are a testament to the technical depth, creativity and resourcefulness of Tim and the entire engineering team that he has built here at New Focus."
"Tim has been instrumental to the success of tunable laser commercialization," said Professor Martin Fejer of Stanford University, a recognized leader in the field of nonlinear optics and optical-signal processing. "Through the numerous technical innovations driven by Tim and his New Focus team, their tunable lasers have matured into robust and reliable instruments that are used across multiple markets, not just telecommunications."
"Tim has continually pushed the envelope of tunable laser technology," said Jean-Marc Verdiell, Intel Fellow and Director of Optical Technology. "His pioneering work and guidance were key in the success of their tunable laser program, including their network tunable laser program which we recently acquired."
Currently New Focus is the leading supplier of tunable lasers for research and test-and-measurement in both telecom and non-telecom applications. Their first tunable laser offering, developed by Dr. Timothy Day, was in 1992.
The IEEE/LEOS Engineering Achievement Award is given to recognize an exceptional engineering contribution which has had a significant impact on the development of laser or electro-optic technology or the commercial application of technology within the past 10 years.
The award ceremony will take place on Monday, November 11th at LEOS 2002 in Glasgow, Scotland. For more information regarding IEEE/LEOS Engineering Achievement Award, visit their website at www.i-leos.org.
