The indicator is the Chicago Board Options Exchange's Market Volatility Index , known as the ``fear gauge'' since it measures how worried investors are.

Steep declines in the VIX to levels in the 20s are said to suggest an overly optimistic, even complacent, market susceptible to setbacks. A spike in the VIX to levels over 40 may signal investors are overly pessimistic and stocks could rise.
