Fingers crossed, I have not have a HDD fail yet. In the last 20 years. :) About 1-2 computers at home + 1-2 at work.

I only disposed of HDDs due to outdated capacity. E.g. 10Gb drives or so.

I do backup (not frequently enough though ;)). That's the real risk control. Replacing HDD before it fails is not, since you don't know when it will fail and you don't know if the new one is a lemon. ;)
