I'm sure you could describe a scenario in which my position would make me out to be a liar, but that's pretty close. i.e. You accept that in theory violating a law might not be an attack against society, but you think it would only not be an attack against society if the law is unconstitutional, fundamentally unjust, or perhaps totally ridiculous (for example a very strict 35 mph speed limit on normal interstates). Is that an accurate assessment of your opinion?

I believe that most of the time the law should be respected for what it is: the law.

I allow some exceptions. It sounds like the difference in our positions is mostly one of degree.

One of my pet peeves is people who leave their shopping carts out in the parking lot so they roll around and bang in to other people's cars, especially if it's windy. Here's a situation that doesn't even violate any law, except that of good manners. It raises my costs to pay somebody to gather up abandoned carts, so I take mine back to the store or collection point just because it's the right thing to do. Even if it's raining. It's also my prerogative to bitch about people who thoughtlessly leave their carts out, expecting somebody else to take it in for them just because they can get away with it.

More to the point, I really don't care if you go around testing the limits of the law in so-called victimless situations, but don't expect me to bail you out if you get caught. OK?

It's been fun debating this with you, but I'm done.
