Tandberg to Acquire NDS? DTV Portfolio 9/24/99 In attempt to penetrate the US DTV market, Oslo, Norway-based Tandberg Television will acquire NDS?s DTV products business for $279 million. The transaction will be financed partly by cash and partly by Tandberg shares.
NDS? DTV division will be folded into Tandberg Television, which will be marketed as Tandberg NDS to capitalize on NDS? strength in the digital satellite broadcast market. Tandberg Television will continue to be headquartered in Oslo. NDS CEO Abe Peled is expected to become Deputy Chairman of the group, and Arne Graee, CEO of Tandberg Television, will continue as CEO for the combined company.
NDS?s DTV portfolio, part of Rupert Murdoch?s News Corp. empire, includes the BBC, NTL, a leading cable provider in the UK, China Satellite, British Telecom, and Reuters, as well as BSkyB.
Tandberg, established in 1984, specializes in storage and packet-based broadcasting systems. NDS has a stronger market share in the US than Tandberg and has its strength in ENG and interactive and data broadcasting applications. The division will concentrate on developing hardware for MPEG-2/DVB-T distribution systems, which is the digital standard for US satellite broadcasters.
