NMI (Non-Manufacturing Index) at 42.9%;January Non-Manufacturing ISM Report On Business(R)

Business Activity Index at 44.2%;New Orders Index at 41.6%;Employment Index at 34.4%

The report was issued today by Anthony Nieves, C.P.M., CFPM, chair of the Institute for Supply Management(TM) Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee; and senior vice president -- supply management for Hilton Hotels Corporation. "The NMI (Non-Manufacturing Index) registered 42.9 percent in January, 2.8 percentage points higher than the seasonally adjusted 40.1 percent registered in December, indicating contraction in the non-manufacturing sector for the fourth consecutive month, but at a slightly slower rate. The Non-Manufacturing Business Activity Index increased 5.3 percentage points to 44.2 percent. The New Orders Index increased 2.7 percentage points to 41.6 percent, and the Employment Index decreased 0.1 percentage point to 34.4 percent. The Prices Index increased 6.4 percentage points to 42.5 percent in January, indicating a decrease in prices from December. According to the NMI, two non-manufacturing industries reported growth in January. Respondents are concerned about the global economy and the continued decline in business and spending."
