From Bill Gates' NYT column:

"QUESTION: At what point will Microsoft stop developing applications for Mac computers?

"ANSWER: We've just signed an agreement to continue to develop our Office applications for the Mac into the next century, and the next version of these apps will be the most significant we've ever done. We're investing in the platform and hope for its success.

"Microsoft and Apple have a long relationship. We have eight million shared customers. Steve Jobs, who is back running Apple at least for now, is an old friend -- although negotiations between our companies were under way long before Steve's return.

"There are numerous benefits of the agreement. It will increase the cooperation between our companies, although we'll remain competitors. It will enhance the visibility of the Mac version of our Web browser.

"The patent cross-licensing included in the deal will let us work together on technical issues without worrying about ownership disputes over patented technologies. There wasn't any specific patent of interest to us, but it's fairly common for technology companies to grant each other cross-licenses.

"Our investment of $150 million in Apple is a tangible sign of the commitment we have to the Macintosh platform and our Mac customers."
