Allen, it just so happens that street.com answered one of our
questions (about # specialists/market makers)...

a bit before the open, the Nasdaq -- with multiple
specialists, linked via computer -- will start posting opening
prices, so that's another tipoff.
On the other hand, the NYSE has only one market maker
per stock, so with big volume at the open, that market
maker needs time to match up buys and sells and
determine a reasonable opening price. That's why trading
doesn't always begin at 9:30.
