<< Why doesn't SGI have greater percentage of general enterprise wide business in the server category>>
It's the old chicken-and-egg problem. SGI doesn't have as many apps that can run on its hardware as e.g. Sun, HP or IBM. And it's hard to convince software vendors like SAP to write for SGI, since its installed server base is so small. So there's your quandary!. For that reason, I doubt SGI will go after established, mature enterprise markets such as OLTP, inventory control, manufacturing operations, etc., just because the entrenched presence of Sun, HP, IBM makes it too hard to break in. I think it stands much better chance in newer server markets, such as web serving, media streaming, data mining, etc. But, as we discussed before, better marketing strategies and focus are needed.
<IRIX does not fair well against Solaris in the reliability department>
There were problems with reliability of IRIX on Origins when they first came out. Things have much improved in the past 6 months. I think in some cases MTBF numbers on Origins are better than on Suns. Still, SGI needs better 7x24 support -- no argument there. |
