The Supreme Court (SC) should attempt to reflect the balance of opinions in the country over a medium term average and not be the echo chamber of one party. I favor some term that is a prime number and has no common factor of 2, 3, 4, or 6. This means 7, 11, 13 or 17 years terms make sense.

There is an ecological reason that cicadas follow such a pattern. It provides the richest mix of variability and doesn't "lock" to short term patterns, but also throws change in often enough that the species doesn't "lock" in place.

For similar reasons the SC should not be dominated by people who have been there for 30 years or more, or change with every Presidency The unarguable acceleration of cultural change is like a speedboat and the life-term SC is like equipping it with a 20 ton anchor. Making it a political body is like having no anchor. We need some stability but not social paralysis - it is currently too long and makes people wait half a lifetime for a chance at justice.

Good article on why this works - not too geeky
