Don't forget that Microsoft's monopoly didn't just happen, they created it. No. IBM created MSFT's monopoly and handed it to them (MSFT) before they (IBM) understood the nature of the PC software game. It is not clear at what point Gates et al understood the windfall they had been given. They did not create it, but they have done a great job of managing it.
