Matsushita Communication, Sony set to take Ericsson, Nokia 3G handset share

Japanese companies like Sony Corp and Matsushita Communication Industrial Co Ltd are set to take 3G market share from Nokia Corp and LM Ericsson AB, FinansTidningen reported, citing Swedish telecoms executives.
Stefan Gidlund, marketing director at retailer Geab The Phonehouse, and Jon Risfelt, chief executive officer at Vodafone Group PLC unit Europolitan AB, said Japanese telecoms equipment makers are a year ahead of Europe in 3G development.
Gidlund said the Japanese companies have a lead when it comes to technology in 3G handsets.
"The traditional telephone manufacturers are principally good at radio, whereas Sony and Matsushita are good at everything from displays to multimedia technique. That is a big advantage, especially when they start developing handsets for the consumer market," Gidlund was quoted as saying.
Jon Risfelt, too said he sees 3G as the Japanese companies' big chance to beat their European counterparts.
"This is their chance to break into the handsets market," he said.
"It isn't at all unlikely that a couple of Japanese companies will be the first to start selling 3G handsets in the Swedish market," he added.
