I hate to defend criminals, but most of the scientists (even Himmler) on the Axis side were not mad men. Instead, they were just everyday scientests like our boys working on the bomb; but they were living in a social and moral construct completely alien to our way of thinking.

Just like a sociopath, their society did not view their victims as people, but rather as objects to be used. This is the same thing that leads to much of the torture and bloodshed that contines today in places like Congo and Timor.

This is also why enemy troops are often grateful to surrender to American forces in a conflict. They know that our POW camps often offer better conditions then their military camps due to our general benevolance.
