Actually Churchill was advocating a much harder line with the Soviets, it was Churchill who sought a compromise.

As far as the Soviets being clawless without us, that is wrong. WWII was won on the Russian front. The Soviet military was extremely powerful and was far from clawless without us. The west has promoted a myth that the Soviets survived only because of US lend lease aid. Not true. All the main Soviet battle equipment was domesticly produced. The bulk of Lend Lease was trucks and food. We also forget that even at the height of the Battle of the Bulge close to 3/4 of the German military was fighting on the Russian front.

Much has been made of Patton's supposed comment that we should attack the Soviets. I hate communism and the Soviet system as much as anyone but as an amatuer military historian it is my opinion it would have been a very tough war and most likely we would have been driven off the continent. The Soviet tank forces were far superior to the West and would have outnumbered us badly. The Soviet ground forces would have overmatched the West. The one advantage the West had was in the air. Tactical air would have offset some of the Soviet ground advantage. And our strategic air force would have been unable to reach the Soviet industrial and urban centers as they would have been out of range. It would have been a very ugly war for us.
