"America is a conservative (small c)nation but the political spectrum has moved considerably to the left now that bushism has been repudiated."

It is a mistake to try to put most people on the conservative/liberal spectrum. Most people aren't ideological, they are pragmatic. If liberal ideas seem to be working, that is where they are. Ditto for conservative ones. For most Americans, the problems with ideologues is that they will march over a cliff as long as avoiding said cliff means backing away from their ideology.

The very real threat the Republican party is facing right now is the cliff marchers have taken over the party and are in the process of ejecting the impure. Couple with an ideological inability to understand the current economic crisis, and they risk being branded as fruitcakes. If you see how i-node is arguing that the only way out of the crisis is to stimulate businesses you realize they really are fruitcakes, but once branded it is a label that is hard to shake.
