<<Intel has a roadmap and tries to stick to it>>

Intel has to have a road map to bring the entire industry along, since they set the defacto standards for the instruction sets, etc., they must give a whole host of others, software writers, other manufactures, time to implement the changes. If the Merced chip were available today without lead time what use would it be to anyone? Also Intel needs to derive the profit benefits of production life of its advances. It is an incredible feat of timing to keep just far enough in front of the completion not to sacrifice the profit of each stage. You can be sure they would have liked to extend the life of the last X86 offerings, but AMD and others have pushed them forward. Notice that they have kept their options open by continuing to support 32 bit X86 development, just in case the 64 bit Merced is received poorly. Think of the enormous effort that will be required by others to bring this new architechure to fruition. These are interesting times we live in.

Regards,

Ed
