BellSouth Mobility DCS Increases its Volume Commitment with Nortel for PCS 1900 Network Equipment

RALEIGH -- BellSouth Mobility DCS has increased its volume commitment with Nortel by $US 100 million for additional Personal Communications Services (PCS) network equipment and services for the Carolinas and East Tennessee.

This increases the volume commitment to $US 200 million for PCS 1900 network infrastructure equipment. BellSouth Mobility DCS signed a three-year, $US 100 million PCS infrastructure
agreement with Nortel in June 1995.

The new commitment was announced in conjunction with today's launch of the BellSouth Mobility DCS digital wireless service in Raleigh/Durham, Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point,Wilmington, and Fayetteville in North Carolina; and Columbia, Florence and Myrtle Beach in
South Carolina.

"Wireless penetration is expected to explode with the introduction of PCS and the market will see 40-50 percent compounded growth over the next four to five years," said Eric Ensor, president, BellSouth Mobility DCS. "We firmly believe that being first-to-market is crucial to the success of technology in this region and to Nortel and BellSouth Mobility DCS."

With the launch of these additional markets, Nortel remains the early leader in the deployment of PCS networks. Every one of the six new digital wireless PCS networks now in commercial service in the United States uses Nortel equipment.

"The BellSouth Mobility DCS network is our largest PCS deployment to date in North America," said Malcolm Cowan, general manager, Wireless Networks, Nortel. "We told key PCS customers like BellSouth Mobility DCS that we'd help them be first-to-market, and we're delivering on that promise. We're meeting our commitments with comprehensive network solutions and proven digital technology."

The BellSouth Mobility DCS network is the first to incorporate Nortel's Smart Base Transceiver Station (Smart BTS) technology. The Smart BTS is an intelligent cell site for PCS 1900 wireless
networks which integrates field-proven digital radio technology with advanced antenna design to provide high performance and increased coverage.

"BellSouth Mobility's deployment of the Smart BTS clearly demonstrates its advantages over conventional antennas," Cowan said. "It brings significant cost and service quality benefits to PCS subscribers."
