Why didn't these more diversified banks do worse than banks that focused on investment or on ordinary retail banking? They did. Why didn't Europe, which never had Glass-Steagal, and which for the most part never had a similar law, not have a catastrophe years ago? It took American ingenuity to figure out a way to cheat the system. We taught them.
