I would say that the greatest writer of all time, IMHO, was Jane Austen, but there are so many great ones. But I understand Coug's point, that there are good writers who "push the envelope" a little, e.g., write extremely long, run-on sentences, like Faulkner and Joyce, or write incomplete sentences, no names come to mind, but it's a common usage.

I can't think of a great writer who made egregious errors like misspelling words, or violating the rules of subject-verb agreement.
