Frontier to Deploy Ascend's IP Navigator Software
Allows Frame Relay Network to Carry Internet Traffic
Business Wire - May 04, 1998 08:48
ALAMEDA, Calif. & ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998-- Frontier Corporation (NYSE:FRO) announced today that it will deploy IP Navigator software by Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) on its Frame Relay network of B-STDX Multiservice Frame Relay switches. With IP Navigator, Frontier can carry both data applications and Internet traffic over the same network, resulting in greater network flexibility, reliability and speed for Frontier's business customers.
"Offering customers IP routing over Frame Relay capability is another indication of our commitment to provide them with the most advanced data services," said Michael A. Coghill, Frontier's Vice President of Network Operations. "IP Navigator gives us the same level of network intelligence that traditionally required the installation of additional routing equipment at every single switch. Eliminating the need for that equipment greatly improves our speed and reliability -- there are simply fewer links in the chain."
"We are pleased that Frontier has selected IP Navigator to add value to its network," said Prabhu Kavi, IP Business Marketing Manager, Core Systems Division, Ascend Communications, Inc. "IP Navigator gives Frontier the unique ability to extend multiservice WAN switching support for Frame Relay and ATM to include IP as an additional service. That's an important differentiator."
Ascend today also announced MultiVPN, a comprehensive strategy for delivering Frame Relay, ATM, and IP and tunnel-based VPNs over the same infrastructure and all manageable by Ascend's Navis products. This industry-first capability enables service providers to differentiate themselves from competitors by creating highly-tailored VPN services for their customers.
Frontier will use IP Navigator with new Virtual Private Network (VPN) Routing capability, which is part of Ascend's MultiVPN announcement. IP Navigator with VPN Routing will allow Frontier to offer customers autonomous "private" networks that actually exist on the public network. These virtual networks eliminate the capital expenditures required to establish and maintain a private network. Frontier customers pay only for the services they need and receive the same level of security and quality of service as a conventional private network.
