Here's an interesting comparison. In the last quarter Dell reported 13.38 billion in sales, and net income of 934 million. Apple just reported a net income of 320 million on sales of 3.52 billion.

Apple made more than a third of Dell's profit on around a quarter of the sales.

The comparison isn't exact, because Dell has an odd fiscal year and corresponding reporting schedule. Dell's quarters end a month later than everybody else's, but they're already in fiscal '06.

This means you can never compare Dell's numbers vs. their competition's numbers for the same exact time periods.

Nonetheless, Apple is clearly running a more profitable business, on a percentage basis, than Dell. And making more than a third of Dell's profit is not too shabby for any company. It's certainly not "pathetic".
