The fact that they can be taught does not discount an innate predisposition. A researcher interested in furthering their own research and gaining widespread acceptance of its conclusions would not surprisingly soft-pedal the potential innateness of qualities underlying the behaviors they are attempting to teach. Innateness is a variable. A researcher is looking for approximately "equal and consistent results". Research always attempts to control the variables...it frequently takes place in an artificially constructed environment...and it often sees only what it is looking for.

Bland is not saying the results are therefore not valid or useful or good, he is simply introducing a grain of salt and saying this is not the whole story.

Take Mozart, to use the world's most obvious and probably tiresome example. Mozart was taught music as a child. So were millions of other children. The results have not been equal. Were Mozart's teachers responsible for the difference? Was Mozart himself responsible? Or was there something unique about Mozart's innate capacity?

Certainly musical ability and emotional aptitude are two different things, but environment and upbringing alone are not sufficient to account for either in toto.
