Many of those southern religions ( evangelicals) hate the Catholics. In the town where my son lives they kept the Catholics from building a church clear into the seventies..............they kept rezoning the land they bought............and I am talking about a fairly nice Houston Suburb. Jones University people do not like Catholics. In fact I would bet money that Bush's religion is among them and I know that Ashcroft's religion is among the Catholic haters. They think Catholics are all a bunch of drunks that worship statues. They particularly are against thinking that Mary is holy ( God forbid that a woman would be helpful in the spirit world). The main priest in my parish is a liberal. He even lets the local anti-war demonstrators use the street in front of the church to protest the war..............he offered it in case we need to seek shelter from hecklers. He used to protest and march for better working conditions in labor camps in Ca..............the guy is great!!! A rarity in the priesthood. Some fo the conservatives stopped donating money because of him but he still does what he believes is right. I argue politics with "Christians" on a frequent basis. Many of them tell me, " But Bush is a Christian". I ask them if killing all those people based on a pack of lies is something Christ would advocate............they can't answer. Christ advocated forgiving and praying for your enemies. I don't recall in the Bible where he said to rally the crowds toward revenge with words like, " We'll get um, dead or alive". Those are not the words of someone who is a true Christian. Gotta stop before I get wound up any further. ( this is a subject that is rather a sore spot right now for personal reasons).
