Interactive Channel Launch With Insight Communications
ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Reaching a significant milestone for the entire cable industry through the introduction of real time, two way interactivity and a comprehensive range of services, Interactive Channel has announced that it has integrated Source Media's (Nasdaq: SRCM) VirtualModem(TM) 2.0 enabling software onto General Instrument's (NYSE: GIC) current family of DCT digital terminals. The first deployment of VirtualModem(TM) enabled DCT2000 terminals will be with Insight Communications in Rockford, Illinois and Columbus, Ohio, keyed to the early 1999 launch of the Interactive Channel's LocalSource(TM) Television suite of services. VirtualModem(TM) 2.0 is a zero cost software download to currently deployed General Instrument digital terminals. The VirtualModem(TM) 2.0 is compatible with the current GI digital terminal product line, including the DCT1000, DCT1200 and DCT2000.
"The integration and deployment of VirtualModem(TM) 2.0 into GI's DCT series of digital terminals is an extraordinarily meaningful development for all interactive stakeholders throughout the cable industry, including operators, programmers and advertisers. Our charter membership commitment to GI's Horizon Developer's Program has proven to be invaluable to our efforts," said Interactive Channel president Tom Oliver. "Real time two-way interactivity is now a reality, and that is good news for all cable operators who now have the ability to roll out their digital offerings with a complete bundle of new revenue-generating interactive services."
"GI has successfully launched its' digital interactive platform and now passes over 28 million homes in North America. The Interactive Channel service is a strong product that can be deployed on our platform and gives operators an additional revenue opportunity. Interactive Channel also gives consumers a whole new suite of valuable services accessible through their familiar TV set at a very high data rate." said Denton Kanouff, Vice-President of Marketing for GI's Digital Network Systems Business unit.

Cable operators will be able to provide a broad spectrum of interactive services over television via upgraded two-way cable infrastructure without relying on telephone connections. These additional capabilities will provide the cable industry with a pre-emptive positioning against satellite and Multiple Dwelling Unit overbuilds, providing the interactive services which act as both an acquisition and retention tool.
