Thanks. Yes, I think that does explain much of it, especially what happens at the open. Could be that, say, a call is quoted as asking 2 7/8, somebody buys 30 contracts on the open, and the mms knock up b/a even if the stock hasn't moved? Hmmm... Though I should think that this sort of thing would happen (if I've understood the possibilities) only with heavily-traded options...
