V.90, the International Telecommunications
Union's designation for the 56 kilobit per
second modem standard, is on track for
approval in September.

Late last week, a two-day meeting of the ITU
study group responsible for the standard found
that field tests of modems built to the draft
specifications adopted in February showed no
significant problems.

Based on this field testing and other
interoperability testing done by modem
manufacturers, the group submitted what are
considered to be only minor changes to the
52-page draft of the V.90 standard, which is
officially called the V.90 Recommendation.
The changes are not expected to require the
modem vendors to upgrade their equipment.

The upshot of last week's meeting, according
to industry experts, is that the V.90
Recommendation is stable and should get final
approval in September.
